How long does it take to have a wedding dress taken in and how much does it cost?

How long does it typically take to take in a wedding dress? And also, what is a price I can expect for this?

I have lost weight since I bought my dress and I keep losing. I want to wait until the closest possible time before my wedding (in over 3 weeks) to have it taken in because I want it to fit as nicely as possible.

Please no one lecture me about losing weight. I can't help it. I'm all wound up.

I tried my dress on the other day and it looks like it no longer fits at the waist but everywhere else it looks fine.

Depending on who you get to do it. You can look into finding someone who does on their own on you can go to a wedding dress shop and have it done. I found and independant person who did mine and she had to take it in at the waist, put bra cups in and hem it and only charged me $118.00. She had it done it two weeks. Independent seamstresses charge less then bridal shops. Most of them cost less than 2 hundred dollars though. If your wedding is in 3 weeks you need to get your dress fixed now. They might charge you more if you are in a hurry to get it back. Don't worry about the weight loss. I just got married and lost a bunch of weight too. Stress will do that to you. CONGRATS.

I do alterations on Bridal and formal wear and I can take in a dress within a couple of days depending on how much I have to do before. Definitely do not take it to a bridal shop to get it done, they will charge you a lot to do the simplest things and some alterations they will tell you they can't do, but just about any alteration can be done. I would try to find an independent seamstress somewhere. If you have any other questions i would be glad to help you.

It all depends on who is doing and and how much work. Just a little tuck in or a simple hem line they can have done in a week or so epending on how busy they are. If there is a lot of work and can take longer. I've hear people paying anywhere from $50 to $1000 for alterations so look around, find someone good and ask for prices!

  • You should wait until a month before your big day to take it to the seamstress/tailor (or whatever) and get it altered. That way you don't have to worry about going back and getting it redone if you continue losing more weight.

I agree with the first answerer. It really all depends on who you take it to get it fixed and how much has to get tucked.

Congrats on the weight loss and the wedding.

It could be around $200. It depends on how detailed your dress is. If it is just silky with not a lot of beads, its not going to cost as much....but if its very beaded it could be a few hundred dollars...I got mine altered at Davids Bridal...they have a rush alteration for an additional $25-50 i think =]

    congrats!
