I want to put a black finish on a guitar, how practical is that....how much money, is it a good idea, etc.

It'll take some work, but there's nothing that makes it a bad idea. It shouldn't be too expensive, all they will do is sand the existing finish off, paint or stain it, then put quite a few coats of clear on it. It will probably be around $80 - $100.
