He's coughing from the drainage more than likely honey. Delsym is the current cough medicine of choice around here. It's OTC and it will let him (and you) get some rest. That cough wears you both out I know. **huggles you hard and rubs your back** ♥ EDIT: Why did Lily have to be on top of me talking about honey . . .. . this is a serious question and now you know what I'm thinking . . . ♥

mix him a cup of tea with lemon and honey in it, have it be warm but not hot. Also get a humidifier and have him sit in the bathroom with it steamed up for a little while (keep the door shut) AND there is a patch that triaminic makes that is applied to the chest and has vapors to help, he is too young really for vapo rub., all this together will ease his cough
and your doc is right, there really isnt anything he can do- no medication will really help (been where you are many times) although I am not sure why he did not give you these suggestions, my pediatrician did

Give him a teaspoon of honey with some lemon juice mixed in it.....always worked like a charm when my kids had a cough.
Also, turn your shower (not bath, shower) on and let the water get to the hottest temp possible...have your child sit in the closed bathroom for about 15 minutes while the water is running. The steam helps.

My doc recommended a teaspoon or tablespoon of honey. He's against all that cough syrup stuff and says honey has the same coating effect minus the drugs.

If you get OTC, be sure to read the directions before giving it to the 5 year old

Choroseptic tastes god-awful, but it works for me. It kinda numbs the back of the throat.

three things....
if his throat is soar too.... have him eat potato chips...
odd right? all of the grease coats his throat....
honey helps a little....
if it is a cold...not allergies....
gargling listerine (the hardest concentration he can) at the back of his throat will help kill the germs....not fun for a 5 yr old though
