Parakeet tailed pulled off?

Help! My son pulled the tail off the parakeet. I sent him in the room and told him that was wrong. Will the tail grow back? I'm keeping him in my room from now on.

Update:

My son will be 5 in Oct and he is the only child. His cousins are older and he doesnt have anyone to play with. He did not like fish. He said he was lonely and I wanted to get a animal that he could interact with more.

The good news is...the bird will be fine physically. The feathers will grow back. You've read the previous comments about bleeding. That is very serious. The bad news is...now you have to deal with your son. :) Well...good luck. You know him better than me..or any other stranger. If he is a serial tail-feather puller....GET RID OF THE BIRD!!! :) Seriously, if it was a one time "boy thing" then talk to him and tell him why and what the consequences of what he did. How it hurt the bird ect. Then...never trust him again alone with the bird. Just dont. He'll earn back the trust when he's about 16yrs. That's okay...that's just how it is. :) Boys.

Enjoy your bird and good luck.

    Yes it will grow back.

How old is your son. If he's three or older, you can teach him how to handle the bird. If he's younger than three, it will take much longer and you won't be able to leave the bird and the child unsupervised under any circumstances.

Was the bird out at the time? Is the bird tame? If no, then was the tail pulled through the bars? Put the cage out of reach, but not out of sight, or your youngster won't learn how to behave around him.

Storybooks about baby animals will help you. Have you son help you feed and change the bird's water. Maybe hold a piece of millet in his fingers while the bird nibbles at it. Just don't ever turn your back and assume your child won't be tempted to grab him again.

I think you can do it!

The tail will grow back faster than you can imagine.

When a bird is frightened (e.g. somebody grabs his tail) he moults! This is a safety mechanism to help him escape predators without injury.

Once my daughter stepped on the cockatiel's tail and the same thing happened; the tail feathers came out! I was upset, picked up the bird, and started examining the feathers near the tail. But they were still loose from the fright, and more fell out! My daughter was upset too, naturally. But the bird wasn't hurt, and the moulted feathers grew back in record time.

This will be a dramatic lesson for your son; explain what happened, and I don't think he'll do it again.

Yes, the feathers will grow back. When they are regrowing and in the blood feather stage, they will be very sensitive and if they break, they will need pulled ASAP.

Thank you for moving the bird to a safer location. Accidents happen and you are working to make everything better. :)

The feathers will grow back in a couple months.

Make sure the bird's not bleeding. It doesn't take much blood loss to be fatal in birds that small.

whilst utilized in flight the tail feathers are used as a rudder. whilst the chicken is perched the tail feathers are person for balancing and consequently that's puzzling for the chicken to stability. I no longer somewhat particular in the event that they boost returned or, in the event that they do, how long it takes yet you probably did no longer ask that the two.
