So far according to my knowledge and from what I have been using in my blog (http://www.dauglydevil.com/ and http://www.aloneinkathmandu.com),/ I can tell that they save it in extensions like JPEG, BMP, and GIF as well.
Both http://www.dauglydevil.com/ and http://www.aloneinkathmandu.com/ are hosted with blogger.com and the pictures I upload there are hosted with picasa.

JPG and JPEG are the same. JPG is the most common. It will do several formats. You can tell by the file extension.
