My 4 month old shar pei puppy gets scared and tries to run away when people try to pet him.?
How can i change this behavior? The trainer at his puppy class told to give treats to the people who wants to pet him but that doesnt work either.

Instead of having people give the treats, which just is scaring your dog more, you do it. But keep people away from your dog. Forcing your dog to interact with people, even by luring with treats can make the behavior worse. You need to understand triggers, thresholds, counter conditioning and desensitization. The website above has lots of info. Keep in mind that even many trainers do not really understand how to help a really scared dog.

First, just let the dog sniff the people while the people stay still. Let the dog come to them, not the people going to the dog. The dog needs time to get to know the unfamiliar smells, dont let people just rush onto try and pet him. Then when it seems that the pup feels safer, have the people have treats in their hand and let the dog come to them again.
I know the people want to pet it and touch it so badly but they need to be patient. The people need to "igore" the dog until the dog is ready to accept people petting him.
If that still doesnt work, then dont force the dog to be petted. He may be too young and you may need to wait a few more months for it to become an active pup who wants to play.

Get better treats, nice, smelly ones. Let him approach the people, and when he does, have the people give him a treat. The best way to start this off is to have people sit on the floor, as opposed to hovering over him (which is interpreted as dominance, in the dog's eyes).
Practice this a LOT! He's got to get used to it, and you need to always make it a positive experience for him.
Once he gets really good at that exercise, practice with people standing up, and with people approaching him to pet him from below (ie. not patting him on the top of the head, which can also be interpreted as dominance, but giving him nice scratches underneath the chin or on his belly).
Good luck :D

Give him just a little longer to maybe settle in. For some dogs it takes a while to warm up. My puppy had the same problem but I just gave her time and know she just can't get enough of people. Give her a least one more month and if nothing inproves go to training with her Some hands on experience with new people might help her a lot. good luck!!

Pets can sense the TRUE nature of people, so I would not be too concerned until she/he is an adult.
Humans tend to force friendships of animals and young children with persons they REALLY should not be associating with.
Remember in your youth when an adult told you to say hi or hug a person, who later you found out was not a person to be trusted.
Animals, however are not faced with that problem too much in that HOPEFULLY humans will not try to convince them to be friends with bad people.
Also they can be frightened by smell due to 'predatorial' hormones we give off, and sex hormones...
Animals see us as male/female first and human last... just like little babies and children whom are upset when daddy is trying to have sex with Mommy, they sense the possible 'competition' or sexual predator and will act accordingly... babies of all species are very INTELLEGENT in that way, till they are made stupid by their peers and by human adults.

No, it does not. Your dog has a genetic condition called weak nerves and this is why it is acting like that.
Dogs with that weak temperament cannot deal with the world and will run away from anything they perceive to be a threat.
There is nothing you can do about it. Do be careful fear biters come from their ranks!!

on no account enable everybody feed the canine from the table. do no longer enable the canine interior the room on a similar time as you're eating. And - this one is arguable in spite of the fact that it works for me - enable him have some thing to consume (in his own bowl) once you consume. Feed the canine after the human beings consume. interior the canine's international, vast canines consume first on a similar time as the junior canines wait and desire. Then junior gets the scraps. as quickly as we've had dessert and cleared the table, I positioned slightly some thing "human beings" interior the canines' bowls - yet that's no longer necessary, i could desire to easily feed them their canine food. My terriers lie with their heads on their paws and wait to get theirs. No begging, no soaring underfoot.
