What breed of dog are Sen. Edward Kennedy's?

I saw them on the news greeting him when he was released from the hospital.

Update:

My AKC book is a 1972 edition. The closest I could come to a similar breed was the Irish Water Spaniel. It is a "sporting breed" and I see from the AKC link that Porti is a "working breed". Thank you all so much. It had really been bugging me. When I saw them on the news they appeared so allert and self-controled. Happy to see him, but not overly. They just seemed very special! Thanks again

Definitely PWD, this is a clip from an article. The whole thing is at the link. With what I think is the cover of the book.

I 'm pretty sure they are Portuguese water Dogs.I didn't see them very well on T.V. but that's what they looked like to me. The Kennedys really love dogs.
