Swimming during your period?
My youth group is going up to the lake tomorrow...unfortunately, my period started today. I was going to use a tampon, no sweat, change it whenever I get out of the water, but now my mother is freaking out at me. She thinks I'm going to get an infection and go sterile and die from the lake water (even though my belief is that the sea and pool water she's okay with is probably worse) so she's refusing to let me go.
Anyone have any medical advice sites or anything to show that water is not going to invade my uterus and cause it to shrivel up and fall out?

I am in medical school, and there is no reason why you would get an infection... tampons will not absorb the water and wearing a tampon during swimming is best. Your more likely to die from TSS (toxic shock syndrome) then from the lake water lol. TSS is a very rare illness that you can get from wearing tampons. It's deadly. But no worries, you will be fine. So tell mom to chill and that you got advice from a med student

THere is no medical advice for this because scientists assume people use common sense to figure these things out. If tampons companies were selling tampons that could get infections and make your uterus shrivel they wouldn't be selling them. Water will not enter your vagina. (Use the same logic you have when you're not on your period.) They do however put a warning on the box for people that use tampons for long periods of time. Your mother is wrong. (Sometimes it happens. I had a friend at summer camp, and her mother wouldn't let her freeze her water overnight because she thought the frozen water would develope cells that would give my friend cancer.) You will not get an infection as long as the tampon is used properly. The worst you could get is a yeast infection, and women can get that without tampons. I can explain the logic, but i can't convince your mother. You'll just have to search around and stick to what you believe is the truth.
And also, your period will not slow down when you get in the water. Always wear a tampon when you're in the water on your period.
I wish you luck, because moms are not easy to diagree with. I know, i'm 14 years old. Worse come to worse, you just won't be able to go.

Don't worry. Go swimming, I've never heard of anyone dying from swimming in a lake before, some lakes even have lido's sectioned off. The only time you should worry is if you've drank the lake water! Your mother is worrying too much. Gosh, the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park in London has a swimming club and women swim in it every morning with the club and no one's died yet.

I didn't find any medical sites to link for you but I can tell you from experience that I have been to the lake a million times during my period and have worn a tampon and as far as I can tell, my uterus is still intact. I say go and have a great time!

Going swimming does NOT stop your period.
But swimming with a tampon in also WON'T cause you to get an infection. Gravity will always cause your blood to flow out of the vagina, water won't get sucked in...it's not like sperm...it won't swim up your cervix and hurt you. Older women are always freaking out about things that used to be seen as dangerous...A.K.A. old-wives tales.
It would be a good thing to change your tampon more often than you normally would if you weren't swimming, though...while no danger is posed to your ********, you'd probably feel uncomfortable with a blood and water-soaked tampon in there.

i asked 2 obgyn's comments on the two a sort of and right that's what they instructed me: a million.) excercise is often a ought to in ur on an familiar basis life no remember if u have ur era or not. 2.) while it includes swimming, they reported that's an extremely good thank you to excercise b/c the water could nicely be soothing against ur abdomen. they instructed me that u ought to positioned on a tampon yet a pad acts like a diaper and swells up making it very uncomfortable to swim. in addition they reported that if the tampon hurts u too plenty to positioned on one then they stated that i dont swim till i think extra advantageous. 3.) as for working they defined that it may bypass the two way. this excercise can tire u out quickly b/c u r bleeding and it takes diverse ur capability. they the two reported to apply a tampon and a lite pad so as that that section can breathe whilst u r working. desire this helps u out. if u nevertheless r undecided ask ur obgyn or family members well-being care expert and im particular they are going to answer any of ur questions that u could have. good success!

I live near the beach and have gone swimming when I have had my period (using a tampon). I'm still here and never had any problems with it. Wearing a tampon will not make you sterile. LOL..have your mom read the tampon box.

it wouldnt hurt you in the first place, she lets you swim in lakes when youre not on your period, doesnt she?
trust me, ive swam in lakes, pools, and rivers on my period with a tampon (so have all my friends) and we're all fine.
plus it was a topic in sex ed. so your mom is just misinformed.
the water won't "invade your uterus" or anything.

my period always stops in water...I know a lot of other woman with this virtue too although i know some woman without it..
i wouldn't wear a tampon in the water...that's pretty dangerous...tampons absorb things...better off going without..even if it doesnt stop it won't be very heavy
while in the water...besides if you're in a lake nobody will see anything and you will have enough time to put one in after the fact just make sure you keep a towel close by and tampon ready
4 thumbs down wtf?
if im wrong about the water being absorbed that's one thing but i can tell you that me and my best friend and a couple of my other friends DO NOT BLEED IN WATER...maybe you do maybe you don't but i dont think it's anybodies place to tell mE or you or anybody when they bleed and when they don't ....any sort of water always stops it for me...don't bleed in the shower or in pools, rivers..lakes..etc....
like i said i know woman where it stops and woman where it doesn't....some woman get their period for 3 days..others 7...every womans different...
just needed to clarify
