Shop around. Also, check the airlines own websites - a few have been wising up to how many people go to orbitz or priceline and you can sometimes get a better deal going to the airline directly.

Unfortunately with the gas prices, I don't think there is an affordable way to fly. You can check the usual low cost websites like sidestep.com (which checks multiple airlines at once) or Kayak.com. Also, just an FYI, American Airlines will be charging $15 for your first suitcase and $25 for your 2nd on any purchases made after June 15th. The trend for the last couple of weeks has been going up, and I don't think the prices are going to get better any time soon.
