Catholics, what do you think of this quote by John Henry Cardinal Newman? Does it apply at R & S?
Here is the quote:
If you would have some direct downright proof that Catholicism is what Protestants make it to be, something which will come up to the mark, you must lie; else you will not get beyond feeble suspicions, which may be right, but may be wrong. Hence Protestants are obliged to cut their ninth commandment out of their Decalogue. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour" must go, must disappear; their position requires the sacrifice. The substance, the force, the edge of their Tradition is slander. As soon as ever they disabuse their minds of what is false, and grasp only what is true,—I do not say they at once become Catholics; I do not say they lose their dislike to our religion, or their misgivings about its working;—but I say this, either they become tolerant towards us, and cease to hate us personally,—or, at least, supposing they cannot shake off old associations, and are prejudiced and hostile as before, still they find they have not the means of communicating their own feelings to others. To Protestantism False Witness is the principle of propagation.
red, I think tomorrow I will use your post to show my children what the definition of hypocrisy is.

Yes, it is relevant.
Some anti-Catholic questioners and respondents display a willful disregard for actual Church teachings. For example, everyone knows that Catholics don't worship religious artwork. Yet hardly a day passes when someone doesn't raise the accusation of idolatry. That is bearing false witness against a neighbor, or worse: Bearing false witness against a brother or sister.
On the other hand, many of our Protestant friends ask legitimate questions in an attempt to learn more about original Christianity. For example, they ask whether Catholics pray to Mary. Given the modern meaning of the word "pray," which includes worship, no, Catholics do not pray to Mary. However, Catholics have not provided clear answers, allowing a legitimate debate to continue.

I lived a large portion of my life in Medford, Oregon. This is a town that most of you have never heard of, but if you have, its likely for its famed anti-catholic billboard adorning Interstate 5. This sign read, "The Pope is the Anti-Christ." Now as a Catholic, this isn't the first time I have faced religious bigotry and it likely wont be the last. In this case, I feel that Cardinal Newman is right. The truth is though, I honestly couldn't be more proud to belong to a faith that, despite blatant disrespect, despite being called the "The Great Whore," the worst retaliation is a statement lightly criticizing the sin of slander. No damnation to hell, no clam to be supreme, only a broken commandment. That says a lot about the Catholic faith, and that even says more about the Protestant ones.

As a convert to Catholicism who is also personally familiar with the Protestant mindset concerning the Church -- specifically evangelicals (both denominational and non-) -- I'd say this is spot-on, as applied to those who make it their business to rail and rant against the Church at every opportunity and view Catholics as their personal mission field. I'm just grateful that it's not (yet) the mentality of the entire herd. There are some who have "lost their dislike" and actually see us as brothers and sisters in Christ, though they draw the line at accepting certain parts of Catholic doctrine.

Yes, He's right
and this should be applied in viewing Protestantism and the non Christian religions also
Demonizing" the others" and making a characture based on false and or exaggerated ideas of what "they" teach are wrong
Catholicism especially is frequently misrepresented by people who apparently have never read the Cathechism of the Catholic Church

Cardinal Newman's quote has left me nearly speechless. As I think about it, the true motive he pointed out is absolutely correct, yet so simple. They have to lie to make Catholicism false.
Oh God...
If you have to lie to make Catholicism false, and further to leave it, does that also mean the new "religion" you formed is nothing more than a big fat lie too?
God bless.

I fully agree with the quote and I really do think that although not all of the other Christian people on here are hateful toward us, the vast majority are and I do think this quote definitely admonishes them for this sin. You know they won't see it this way because the majority of them that this statement does apply to are also prideful and self righteous. So yeah I agree.

I think it applies to some. But I don't know if ignorance is the same as deliberately giving false witness. But he has a point.

Looks like a Logical fallacy of assertion.
What do protestants make Catholicism to be, and why is this a lie?

it only applies to narrow minded protestants who doesn't bother to look up the fact of Catholic church
