They are illegal there, can be considered a deadly weapon. Then again, technically, in CA-LA County, anything longer than 6inches can be considered as such.
I know brass and aluminum knuckles are not longer than 6in, but they are labeled as such. Along with lead-filled gloves.
So it may be a Possession of a Deadly Weapon. It's not as bad as it sounds. They do drop such charges sometimes, especially if there wasn't any injuries or exposure of the 'weapon'.
What was the incident? A fight, voluntary car search, school search..?

Yes, they are illegal. California Penal Code Section 12020(a) prohibits the possession of numerous types of weapons, including "metal knuckles," and provides for up to a year imprisonment for any violation.

Sweet Suzie 777, you didn't get into a gang fight did you? They are illegal about everywhere. Could go from probation to 1 year.

could be felony or misdemeanor, depending on what the officer decides. it is perceived as deadly weapon.
