when a person is in jail and has asthma?

How do they get their medicine if they have an attack and they have daily meds they can't miss out on if the authorities take away their meds?

    Interesting answers.

One of the first things that happen when you are being processed into county jail is an evaluation by a nurse. They find out if you have any medical conditions and require any medication. If you require regular medication, they bring it to you once or twice daily. If you require more frequent medication or treatment you are placed in a special medical section of the jail which provides round-the-clock treatment and care.

State prison is similar. You are evaluated by a nurse when you first arrive. Some medications like antibiotics or Tylenol will be given to you all at one time and you may keep them on your person and take them as needed. Other medications require that you go to pill call twice a day to get them. This includes diabetics who need daily insulin shots. If you require more constant care, the are medical prisons set up like convalescent care hospitals. They're like an old folks home except with handcuffs.

I speak in jails and prisons some. For the most part they look after medical situations fairly well. There are always that 10% that don't care. Family members need to keep an eye on members that are locked up.

Legally the jail is obligated to furnish them with meds and medical care;. If you read the newspapers you know that the jails do not always follow the law. Many, many people die in custody due to lack of proper medical care and medicine. Look at all of the illegal immigrants that die daily because they are denied proper medical care. Our country was not like this before Bush. I pray that it will not be like this after Bush.

They administer the meds each dose to the prisoner if it is deemed medically necessary. The prisoner does not get to keep the meds but will be given his or her meds when he or she needs them.

Sometimes they don't & die in jail because the jailers really don't care if the inmates live or die. The sheriffs deputys that work at the jail are the lowest deputys on the totem pole.

Jails suck as far as medical goes. I knew a guy who died because he was a heroine head for 20 years (my uncles schoolmate) and they didnt treat him with anything.. Most jails can care less about the inmates. You lose every status and privilege when you are issued your orange DOC uniform..

They have to get their condition verified, their new prescription is authorized then they get a new prescription from the jail.
