Invited to dinner, what to bring?
We have been invited to a friends house for dinner. Normally, people bring wine as a gift but in our case, we are Christians and believe that consuming strong drink is wrong. What could we bring as a gift instead without looking cheep.

I don't know if there is a cultural reason for her doing this, but as a frequent dinner party hostess, I can certainly commiserate with you. I also have a certain person in my circle who insists on doing this (and I know it's not cultural for her; unless you can count "insists on having junk food" culture. ANyway, I like to serve a set menu-I plan for days to make sure all my food items complement eachother and serve well together, with varying cooking times so they all come out hot at the same time, etc...When my friend insists on bringing other things, it insults me somewhat. 1, it throws off the balance of my meal and doesn't usually go well with what I am having (in my mind) and 2, it is a bit of showboating to do that to your hostess. So my guess is, since you have tried telling her not to do it and she didn't use her culture as an excuse, it probably has more to do with just preferring her own food. Does she eat what you cooked or only the part of the meal she brought? Some people's mothers let them have their own separate meal. It's a habit they are so used to, even as adults they don't think they are obligated to eat what the rest of the table is eating.

A gorgeous bouquet. Unless you are close enough to these people to call and ask if there is something you can bring, or to call to say you'd really like to bring dessert, then a bouquet would be the safest, most appreciated thing to bring. It shows you appreciate being invited and were thoughtful enough to arrange for a nice bouquet (and even if it turns out lthe people are allergic to flowers, they at least know your heart was there). A nice bouquet can run you as much as a bottle of wine so it ain't cheap yet it's beautiful.

Flowers are always nice, or a box of really nice chocolates....The problem with bringing dessert, as many have suggested, is that the hostess has probably already planned something, and will feel obligated to serve what you bring... Unless you say " I'll bring dessert" when you are invited, its not a good plan.

A Yohoo! jk don't bring that!! that would definitely make you look cheep.
If its like a barbecue, then you could bring somin' like a veggie dish.
My family doesn't believe in alcoholic drinks either. If its a party where people are drinking wine, you could bring sparkling cider or something like that.
You could bring Flowers or a small plant.
Or a dessert like fancy cheesecake or expensive chocolates.
Hope it helped!:D

Bring something for dessert. A fancy torte or pie in a bakery box makes a nice presentation, too.

Just a real nice dessert. Even if they already have dessert, you can have extra to choose from. That's what we do! Enjoy your dinner and friends!

Baklava.
The only thing better than booze is baklava. Everyone loves the greek confection and it goes perfect with anything other than A-1 steak sauce.
rate me thumbs up if you agree
