Online is not the way I recomend shopping for stuff like camping gear. For stuff like camping gear (especially things like tents, sleeping bags, packs and clothing) it really helps to be able to try it out of see it in person. That way, you can feel exactly what it weighs and how bulky it is. For example, a tent is a big purchase, online, you just get a couple of pictures and a quick description, maybe some reviews. At a store, you get to pick up a stowed tent and look at the display models in person. If I had to buy online, I would go to a sporting goods store, find something I liked and see if I could find it for a better price at some site.

Campmor out of New Jersey i very good and cheaper than REI, EMS, etc., at least they used to be when I shopped there. Bought almost all my gear at their store in Paramus when i lived near New Jersey and gas wasn't five dollars a gallon. They sell online, also.

It's more geared to those who are actual outdoorsmen as opposed to the would-be type. They don't sell hunting gear, either, which I like, just camping, backpacking, climbing stuff, kayaks, etc.

steepandcheap.com They buy like truck loads of the same item and sell it for cheap. When it sells out, they sell another item. I hit and miss for gear on this one all the time, but its cheap.
