Tampa Bay Rays, #1 in Baseball?!?!?!?

For about a half an hour today, the Tampa Bay Rays stood alone as the only team in Major League Baseball with a 600 winning percentage. Arizona joined them soon after and when the Red Sox lost, the Rays percentage points lead became a half game. Now at the close of playing today, after 50 games, almost a third of a season, the Tampa Bay Rays are the #1 team in the American League and tied with the Diamondbacks for #1 in all of baseball.

I know there's still a long way to go, but my question is this:

What the hell?

I knew they were going to surprise a lot of people this year.

But honestly, they're surprising me now. I knew they were going to be decent, but they're playing awesome baseball this year. They're a fun team to watch.

It's inevitable. They've been around for a little over 10 years now, so they have to get good at some point. Hopefully it will be this year, as their pitching and ability to defend home-field advantage is very impressive this year.

As a Baltimore fan, I sincerely hope if the O's don't make the playoffs, which they probably won't as they'll finish under .500 for yet another season, Tampa Bay wins the division and knocks out at least one of Boston or New York from the playoffs.

Hell may be other people, as Sartre would say, but Heaven has been watching my Rays prove again and again the fine stuff they are made of! Pitching and fielding, grit, grunt, gristle--every man on that team proves the team is 600 worthy! It's been a long 11 years, but this season, this team, this teamwork, this ecstasy is delicious--who knows how long it will last, who knows how dreary the days of October, but for now, it is bliss. Follow it! -benbrick6 (Rays season ticket holder for 11 years)

Dude the devil um rays are an up and coming team they sure are putting on a show right now and believe me if they continue to shock the east it would go down as the shocker of all shockers! But reality says the sox got the east and the home field throughout the postseason but hey dude the rays above the yanks=priceless!

The Rays starting pitching and bullpen have been phoemenal. With kazmir, shields, sonnanstine and jackson that is not a bad rotaion of starters. Their bullpen looks good because of Troy Percival who has a good amount of saves for the year. I think he has like 14 or 15. Also Al Reyes came off the DL which helps too. With their overall young talent and pitching, it is going to be exciting watching them play

baseball is not always about having the best lineup but more players coming threw at the right times. Look at the '07 rockies, they didnt have that great of a team on paper but they got things going and it took them to the world series! baseball is a funny game and thats what i love about it!

well there is something going on in florida this year. This has gone on too long to just be "early season flukes." Right now I think anything can happen, but I sure would not count either florida team out of the playoffs. at all.

This is no fluke. They pitch well and are 21-12 against the "vaunted" AL East

I think that they will contend all year

the (devil) rays have been my sleeper team for years. i knew they had it in em, it was just a matter of time. i'm a yankee fan but i think the rays will be a definate contender either this year or next year.
