As much as I love the Bible - it's most certainly NOT the first book ever written, nor does it claim to be. While it does contain the account of the creation of the world, that is not when it was written.

As Wikipedia says "Texts handed down by oral tradition may predate their fixation in written form by several centuries."

The book of Job is commonly accepted as the first book of the Bible written, and though its authorship is uncertain many believe it was written by Moses. Moses was born around the late1300s B.C.

The oldest known writings were Sumerian and were written around 2600 B.C.

These writings weren't "books" written on paper as we have today, but I don't think that's what you were asking (though I could be wrong).

The Epic of Gilgamesh is often credited as the first written work of *fiction* and it was written around 2150-2000 BC

    First Book Ever Written

  • 1 decade ago

The epic of Gilgamesh is generally considered the first work of literary fiction ever written. It was composed around 1950-1750 BC.

The first books appearing in modern bound form were developed in the 3rd century, but did not become more popular than papyrus scrolls until almost a thousand years later. It is unknown which book was first bound in this manner.

The first printed books were produced in the 9th century in China, again, the earliest example is unknown.

The earliest western printed book was the Bible.

Based off Christianity it would most likely be the Holy Bible. Though in ancient text of course. It is never mentioned in the Bible when exactly it was written. Like others have said, it is nearly impossible to know what the first book is since people are discovering ancient texts every so often.

There are many beliefs of what the first text/book may be though there is no proven "first book" at least not yet.

The first written story that has come down to us is The Epic of Gilgamesh. It is a mythologized account of an historical figure, Gilgamesh, a ruler of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk, believed to have ruled sometime between 2700-2500 BC.

Deuce already recommended Screwtape Letters, which is excellent. I was going to say almost anything by C.S.Lewis (who wrote Screwtape Letters). Mere Christianity is also very good, also The Great Divorce, Letters to Malcom, and of course the Narnia stories. He also wrote a science fiction trilogy that is wonderful. The Narnia stories and the sci-fi trilogy are not actually about -Jesus-, but about Christian principles. So people who aren't Christians can read them and agree with them. 8^)
