Is a 1420 on the SAT's good? I know it's below average...but what do most people score their first time?
I just want to know if colleges will totally ignore my application just because of my SAT score. I have a 3.5 GPA, will that ever happen?

1420 is considered a little low since they upped the total score (2400 now, i believe). i scored 1760ish on my first try for the SATs but i've had friends score into the 2000s.
if you're applying for colleges, think of it this way: the higher your SAT scores are, the lower your GPA can be. inversely, the higher your GPA is, the lower the SAT score can be.
but your best bet is to take the test again and try to get a higher score. every college has their own criteria though, and some colleges even have an "eligibility calculator" that help freshman estimate their chances of getting in when compared to last year's freshmen.
btw: see my sources for an example of an eligibility calc
