Legend has it that, back before this site was live and public, one of the creators up an image as a placeholder, a pict of a stuffed hamster (or maybe a real hamster, but I think it was stuffed).

The image was left in place, and no "mascot" or logo was chosen.

Then, when they were going to go live, someone said "We need whatever the real image is going to be!"

They looked at the hamster, and someone thought, "Hey, Yahoo Answers -- YA -- Yamster! THAT could be our mascot."

Thus, the Yahoo Answers Yamster was born.

Squirrel, lol. Most people think it's a rat!

    But it's the Yamster.

(I've been on this site for a long time, and saw the answer to this from someone who was around before the site went live, in the "beta testing" days.)

He is the Yamster, a ninja hamster, the mascot of Yahoo!Answers. He is Yamster because this is Yahoo! and the y substitutes for the h.
