    There are several contenders from amongst the monitor lizards (family Varanidae - the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard, is also a member of this family). The two most likely candidates are the lace monitor of Australia and the Nile monitor of Africa, both of which can reach 6.5 feet in length.
