How can I speed up this laptop?

My boss wants me to speed up her laptop.

So other than reinstalling the OS, what are some things I could clear out and change so it will work faster?

Update:

Yes I am on Windows XP

It would help if you told us what OS you are on...I shall work on the presumption that you are on Windows XP.

    1. Stop all startup programs (free up loads of RAM), go on Run > type "msconfig" < go on "startup" tab > untick everything except your anti-virus software.

    2. Free up hard drive space. Download ccleaner (crapcleaner) this is a excellent trusted piece of freeware (#1 download on filehippo.com) will clean up the computers registry and also clean out all the temporary files ect.

    3. Kick off any spyware (its a must) many anti-virus programs only detect viruses but the more modern threat on the web is spyware, which are basically written to collect your data (for money) or for other malicious purposes. Download Spybot - Search & Destroy this beauty of a program is just amazing. I have got rid of 600+ spyware on my PC.

I hope this has been of some use,

    Cheers,

    Shed.

Get rid of any hefty antivirus suite such as Norton and Mcafee and install something a little more light weight and free*. I use Avast and it keeps me safe and keeps the computer running quick. (http://www.avast.com/)

There are also the basics such as defragmenting the computer

(Start >> Acess. >> System Tools >> Defragmenter)

    and Disk Clean Up

(Start >> Acess. >> System Tools >> Disk Clean up)

Doing those two should help load times. Also run a spyware check to make sure the system isnt bogged down by spy ware.

    My favorite is Spybot. (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)

*Note that if the laptop is for business use, your boss will need to pay for a subscription (though you get a month free). Avast is only free for home use.
