The hard drive is used for game saves and some games require you install some of the game or all of the game before you can play(like grand theft auto). Also, downloading demos or games will take up hard drive space, as well as adding your own music or pictures and videos.
I have a 40GB PS3 and I still have a lot of space left. My hard drive is only being used for demos, games, and save data, though.
You can upgrade your hard drive later on if you choose. All you need is a laptop hard drive (2.5``). You can get a nice sized one for about 100 bucks, (usually like 250gb) depending on where you buy it from. If you choose to upgrade, it`s fairly easy to install, and it doesn`t void your warranty..
