Why is my exhaust leaking "water"?

I'm not sure if it's water, but it looks like it and it's leaking from my muffler.

Should I get it checked? What could be causing it?

Car: 2000 Toyota Echo.

If it only happens on a cold start and goes away quickly, it's probably just condensation and is normal.

    Exhaust Leaking Water

  • 1 decade ago

it's probably just condensation and is normal. when the engine is not yet hot.

If you look at the water level in radiator and check the level does not start to drop over the next few days/ week ( when cold! ) then you know for sure its not a leak.

when I had a gasket leak the water also got in the oil and made it a white mess, but this is very abnormal.

As I said it's probably just condensation and is normal, that's why exhaust systems rust so much

Exhaust Bandages are designed really for use over pin-holes in plane pipe runs or silencer bodies, not pipe joints. In your case a bandage would be a very poor substitute for proper packing of sealant into the joint. It would work to mute the noise enough for you not to attract attention, but it wouldn't last long. Just enough for you to drive to the workshop probably. A proper exhaust bandage has a sealant that should cover the hole before you wrap the band around the pipe. This will be interesting for you to adapt it to a leaking joint. Some of them are cloth based and involve soaking the bandage before applying. The heat then dries it and seals it. Follow the instructions very carefully and don't try to cut corners. Be careful how you tighten up the clamp bolts or you may damage your "temporary" bandage. It's an MOT failure in the UK to have an exhaust bandage, this probably applies to your own local vehicle tests too.

If you are going underneath, can you fix the leak by replacing the gasket or ring. To your question, exhaust tape would not make too much of a difference in sound.

I know this is 6 years old but all these people are somewhat right. Water is a byproduct from a gas combustion engine. It's produced and sent out of the engine as a vapor and if your muffler is cold it turn back to a liquid state.

If it's consistant, take it to shop. If it happens under same time and situation ONLY, then it's normal. condensation. Try to check after you've driven it at least good 20 miles before turn the engine off. There shouldn't be no water AT ALL.

Condensation, but if its doing it in the warm part of the day,you could have a warped head or block,or head gasket.

These newer aluminum engines you have to be careful to never over heat them,or wash the engine when warm.Always wash to engine when the car has set overnight.

They are not like the old cast iron block and heads, that you could drive to the car wash.

It is condensation. That happens because the temperature of the exhaust is hotter than the air outside. Get a glass of ice water and set it outside and it will do the same thing. Nothing wrong with your car.
