Would it be OK to put 89-Grade Gas in my Audi?
It's a 1998 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8L___87/91 Unleaded Premium
I've been running it on Regular unleaded for some time now with no problems, Would it be better to put 89 in it because I sure don't want to be putting 93 in it.
I bought it at 54,000 and have been driving it on Regular Unleaded up to 75,200 miles, no problem....

Difference
It makes performance difference because of not the octane but the smoothness or richness of the gas it is very little difference but you should use 93.
Consequences
If you put a 89 gas it WILL have a LOWER resale value and if it is not going to be resold your engine is going to have problems in about 2 years.
87,89,91,93 Gas
The higher the number the more smoothness of the gas but the octane is all the same as you can see on therefiller button or the cashier can tell you more about it
Turbo or Supercharger
Less torque or power will equal to lower needs of smoothness in gas but a europian car are more plastic made or high quality gel so need more smoother gas.
Catalyes Converters
They have a certain grade and if u use 89 on a car with a perineum catholic converter it will damage the converter and pollution will have more and it will might not pass smog test.
Sensors
the sensor prevents any problems the will break or be damaged.
Price
Sensor is 200 dollors it is 02 sensors and the joint is 20 dollars.....catalyte is 600 dollars.

your engine has a Knock sensor that will prevent any serious engine damage. (the turbos need premium always). you will probably see premature failure of your 02 sensors and your catalytic converters using lower grade fuel due to the fact that the timing will be retarded in order to stop the engine from Knocking which will cause the engine to burn a little rich. also you will have poor performance and worse gas mileage. the engine was designed for premium but will run on regular or 89 you'll just have to prepare for the repair cost of the cats and 02 sensors ( the cats run about $320 a piece on these cars and the o2 sensors are about $110 ea. you'll need 2 of each plus labor) if you continue to run 87 in the car i will be surprised if you don't need this repair before you hit 100K miles. If you plan to sell the car to someone before this point be truthful and tell them you ran regular gas so they can plan for the repair.

I put regular gas(89) in my A4 the whole 2 years I had it. For me the I did not see any big changes from using 93

Your car will be fine with just 87 in it you might hear a little spark knock if it gets to bad either add some 89 or get a bottle of octane booster

That car recommends Premium, but does not require it. Most newer cars do not require it, unless they are supercharged or turbocharged, because using a lower octane fuel in those engines will cause them to knock.

Running 87 wont do anything to your car, youll just get a little less performance and mileage.
