Is there a way to conduct a formal National Honor Society induction ceremony without a candle lighting?
I'm in charge of conducting my high school National Honor Society's induction ceremony for next year. In the past, we have always had a formal candle-lighting to symbolize the entrance of new members. I was recently informed that we cannot use candles any longer due to potential fire hazards. This worries me because the candles fit nicely into the formal atmosphere of the induction. Is there any other way to hold an induction ceremony without fire?? One that wouldn't be terribly hard to work into my speech? Our sponsor suggested buying NHS pens for the new inductees, but i highly doubt "now if you click your pens twice..." would suffice as an appropriate welcome into the organization. If anyone has any experience with situations simliar to this, please let me know. I fear ordering pens... :)

Consider having the National Honor Society induction some place other than at the high school. If they ask why, tell them they are carrying political correctness to far and if they do not want to use the traditional ceremony then fine. But there is no requirement that the NHS has to cater to the high school and have to change long standing tradition.

It seems sort of ridiculous to no be able to use candles. When i was induced into the national honor society the whole ceremony was centered around the lighting of candles. maybe you could hold the ceremony outside... would that be less of a fire hazard? I can't think of anything that would be as symbolic as the lighting of candles.

Check online, or your local stores, hardware stores, etc....
There ARE "candles" which are ELECTRIC. They have little flame "blubs" that flicker and look very realistic, and they run on small batteries, which will suffice for the ceremony!
They may cost a bit more than normal candles, and you might charge the participants to cover the costs, but they can keep them as keepsakes, too, so they will keep what they pay for.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Have a polite day.

Slacks and an excellent shirt, not sure if a tie is important (I did). yet possibly greater significant is to verify he washes the crib notes off of his hands. have faith me on that one - I discovered the frustrating way.
