Why was Gripe water taken off the market?

My first daughter who is 3 used gripe water. I found it fantastic for her colic. I have a 5 week old and managed to get a bottle of gripe water in a small shop but has been taken off the market so cant get another bottle. It works wonders for her colic. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Update:

I am sure it was taken off the market. I have asked in two pharmacies. I live in ireland. There was only one brand available here. Woodwards I think. I have a sister in England so maybe she could get some for me.

I always keep a bottle of Gripe Water in the fridge. Perhaps only once or twice a year I get terrible wind pain high in the stomach. I had it so bad on one occassion I nearly had to call an ambulance. One swig from the bottle and the pain disappeared in 10 seconds. It's quite incredible how quick it works. (If you get it TOO often see a doc.) It's not a bad taste and amount isn't critical, within reason. 5 mil is definately a teaspoon so I guess 1.5 mil is a dessert spoon or perhaps atablespoon. Don't worry, a small swig does the trick. Quick!

This is from December 2007, this is when it was recalled but nothing lately has been reportered

A commonly-sold gripe water is being taken off the shelves after fears it may be contaminated with bacteria.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a drug alert over Woodward's Gripe Water, which is alcohol and sugar-free.

It is made by Seton Products Ltd and the affected batches are numbered 162, 174, 175, 178, 181, 182 and 183.

The recall of the 150ml bottles is a precautionary measure due to concerns about potential bacterial contamination in the water used by the firm's contract manufacturer, William Ransom & Son plc, at Witham, Essex.

The MHRA said in a statement: "Companies are being asked to quarantine any remaining stock and return it to their supplier for credit.

"It must be stressed that there is a very low risk that children will be affected.

"However, if your child starts to feel unwell after taking this product, you should seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor.

"If you have this product at home, you should not use it and take it back to where you purchased it.

"There are plenty of alternative gripe water products on the UK market. No other UK products manufactured by William Ransom & Son plc and supplied to the UK market are considered to present a risk to people."

This issue came to light on November 21, during a routine inspection of the William Ransom & Son manufacturing plant by the MHRA's good manufacturing practice inspectors.

Well my daughter is 7 months lol, and it is available! For me it was located in the pharmacy. Not a prescription you just have to go to the back and get it.

The articles are rather old. I went through this with my daughter when i thought it was no longer available. The contaminated batch was many years ago.

if tesco in england are still selling it, perhaps you have a tesco near you, i don't know where in Ireland you are but i know a tesco opened in co. Clare recently, so maybe you'd be lucky?

Either that or ask your sister as it's definitely still readily available here in england.

Good luck getting some, it works a treat!

It's definately available over in england in asda - not that i use it, but I considered it! I have been told that warm water with a small amount of brown sugar does the same job, not sure I'd do it though!

Gripe water is not available in Ireland. It is available in Northern Ireland though.
