It's a beautiful name. My brother was named Colm. In Irish it means "dove." It's a fairly common name in Ireland, especially in the West of Ireland. (Our mum is from Ireland.)

Where in the US do you live? I know a few people with Irish family/background and traditional family names that once they move from the main Irish areas (New York, Boston) - people have problems with their Irish names.
Colm is a fairly common name in Ireland. I have met one or two in the US as well - you are not alone :) Be thankful your name isn't Conan - people have a field day with that one.
