A sattelite and a piece of string and centripetal force?

Saw an idea on TV yesterday that was interesting. The suggestion was to use something like spider web which is stronger than man made threads (or rather something that had similar strength, maybe many strands) to connect a satellite (heavy weight?) to earth then use it to lift space rockets up out of the atmosphere thereby saving launch mass. Could this work?

It's called a space elevator, and yes it could work. The main challenge is finding a material strong enough to make the cables out of, carbon nanotubes look like a good candidate.

Arthur C. Clarke wrote a novel "Fountains of Paradise" about construction of a space elevator.
