Rev Wright has retired as pastor as far as I know. If he had continued and had he endorsed a particular candidate the church might have lost their non-profit status.
This would be true for any non-profit organization, not just churches.

Huh? What tax dollars to whom? Last time I checked taxes are paid to the government, not to any church.
