I've heard many people say that work-ex is necessary. Work-ex is definitely needed for the top B-schools. It will definitely help you with the assistantships too.

But I know at least three of my batch mates (we're all 2006 engineering graduates) who've got through good B-schools for this fall term. They have admits in Duke, Rotman, Kelley Business School with less than two years work-ex. One got an assistantship too. But they had good GMAT scores and good profiles overall...

    Hope this helps...

It is a masters degree so 4 year B.S. or B.Sc. or B.A. is needed, at most standard University or College.
