Car people/mechanics - how much should it cost to replace axle shafts due to damaged CV Joint and Boot?

It's a 98 Honda Civic. The muffler is busted and they guy in the shop (a Honda dealership) said in addition to the new muffler there's also an immediate need to replace the axle shaft. He said it was "undriveable". I am suspicious of dealerships - is this kind of thing really needed and how much should it cost? I was told $1,800 for all the repairs.

dealers are always the most expensive place to get your car repaired......i looked at our last weeks repair orders and we installed on a 2000 civic.... a muffler and tail pipe, and left and right axle shafts for 675.34 parts, labor ,tax with a lifetime warranty on the muffler and 2 years 24,000 mile warranty on the axles....call around and get some more estimates...

Get your car away from those vultures! Common practice is to replace the entire axle with a rebuilt unit from NAPA. Places run specials as low as 135-150$ per axle. Then it is all new! Repairing axles is labor intensive and only done when it is the only choice(Like a Fiat 850 Spyder from the early 70's), no one wastes the customers money like that anymore exceppt dealers ripping you off! A decent Alignment/Tire store will do a great job for you- SHOP AROUND! Texas is wrong. 1.8 is putting an axle in. They are going to take your axles out and replace CV joints and their labor time is correct in Chiltons Labor Guide. ASE Cert Auto Tech, 92 GTI16V 2.0L

    Honda Civic Drive Shaft Replacement

It's a typical dealer price. You do need axle shafts in order to drive the car. If it is really bad it can break in half leaving you stranded. The last time I checked on prices for half shafts at the parts store they were around $200 each side. With how prices have gone up it could be double that. You may want to go to a non-dealer mechanic which would probably be cheaper but if they are of good reputation you shouldn't have any problems.

i would take the vehicle to a reputable after market repair shop and have the exhaust system fixed. also they may be able to replace the c/v axle assy. if there is an oreiley auto part store around you, you might be able to get a re manned axle for under 100 dollars and take it with you to have it installed. 1800 dollars is an awful lot of money for these items to be replaced. find out which axle needs replaced before getting the car though that way you will have all the information when you get the part from and after market parts store.

Traditionally Honda spares are expensive. The dealership may be charging a few dollars more, but you have the assurance of after sales warranty on the parts and job. Try and bargain, otherwise go ahead and get the needful done.
