I think it has to do with a lot of things... not really understanding what love is, hoping into things without really thinking about it, not working at a marriage while in it.

So many of the people I went to high school with got married right after graduation or at least a year after graduating. I think for some people, they think that's the next step. They don't know what love is or what it takes to make a marriage work. I only know one couple that is still married out of the dozens that tied the knot after graduation. Love is so much deeper than infatuation or lust... some people can't tell the difference. I'm married and yes we have our fights.... but you have to learn to talk about things and be open with each other and laugh about those silly little things! So many people give up without trying and it really breaks my heart to not see people take their vows seriously.

That is a great question, and if any of us knew the definitive answer I think we would be rich as a consultant...but, I would say that it seems people may be too quick to make the "commitment" to marriage without thinking it through or being properly prepared to go through life's ups and downs with the person they choose. Selecting the person you will spend the rest of your life with is probably the single most important and critical thing you will EVER do (besides having kids), but because it involves emotions and love (powerful forces!), all too often people seem to think with their heart rather than their head and in order to make it last you probably need BOTH.

The fact that getting a divorce is easier than getting a car loan, with less paperwork. Most people don't want to work at a marriage and take the easy way out.

People having unrealistic expectations in a marriage. You should always have standards set, but you can't expect them all to be met, and you can't expect marriage to be all lovey-dovey and rainbows coming out of each other's asses all the time.
