My one year old dog vomits almost once a week between 2 & 4am. I feed him California Natural. Any ideas why?

I've already talked to the vet about it and they told me to change his food, which I changed to California Natural and that sometimes dogs vomit. I want to know what is causing him to be so consistent. Why does he vomit once a week between 2 & 4 am? It is always the same consistency and amount. Surely this isn't normal.

Update:

I currently feed him twice a day half a cup in the morning and half a cup in the evening according to his weight. I began feeding him his evening meal earlier and found the vomit got better, atleast easier to clean up. It looks like partially digested food. No bile is present.

Is he vomiting food or bile? Some dogs will vomit because they have an empty stomach. Perhaps try adding a meal closer to bedtime. I find it easier to keep my dogs on a feeding schedule, to prevent that kind of thing. I have a 1.5 yr old dog who used to vomit bile like clockwork, and found that adding a small meal about an hour before bedtime helped settle his stomach (along with the switch to California Naturals...he's been doing very well on it). It seems to me that his vomiting was caused by an empty stomach-it could be the case with yours, as well. How many times a day does your dog eat? How much per meal?

EDIT: He is not getting enough food. That is the recommended amount for my 7lb. Toy Poodle. Go to this site: http://www.californianaturalpet.com/tools/feeding.... if the feeding calculator doesn't come up, then click on "tools & resources" on the top, and use the calculator to determine the correct amount. I feed my Goldens 3 cups a day, and I am trying to take some weight off each of them right now. For a healthy puppy, he should be getting about 3.5-4 cups per day if he is 60 pounds. More or less depending on weight. Please use the calculator, figure what your dog needs, and give that a try. I consider a Golden to be a puppy until at least 18 months for the purpose of feeding (longer if he is underweight). He is definitely not getting enough food at 1/2 cup twice a day. I hope this helps you out.

I definitely agree with "Leigh". You should be feeding him twice a day (if your not already). When there stomachs are empty for too long, bile forms and can cause vomiting. Try feeding him an hour or so later in the evening than you usually do and see if that helps! You can also ask your Vet about giving him a Pepsid before bedtime, it will help reduce stomach acids.

That is bile the gold/yellow color. That means your dog is hungry. Does he ever eat his own vomit?? They don't have to do that all the time to indicate he is still hungry. You need to feed him more daily. Not just once a day. What do you feed your dog??? Depending on what you feed your dog your dog could be having a reaction to the food as well to cause bile too. Try changing the dog's food to a natural dry food. I hope you are not feeding him Alpo. Alpo makes dogs sick vomiting or diarrhea. Make sure water is available to your dog 24 hrs a day. Dogs need access to water all the time. This also prevents dehydration too especially when vomiting. if you dog is not drinking water take your dog to the vet asap as several times a week can indicate something more serious going on.

doesn't sound like it's the food, if its the food he'll be vomitting almost nightly since he eats everyday. Think is there any different in his routine on that particular day? trash collecting day where he gets into the trash on that day? anything u use to clean the house that may have an odor that cause him to throw up?

I have a cat and he did tha same thing. And it turned out my cat had tapeworms. They get it from consuming fleas that carry it. So i would definately take him/her to your local vet to get dewormed. He will hav to stay at the vet fro approximately 2-4 days. Also i would get him a flea collar if this is the case.

Give him some puppy food! Don't feed him adult dog food and try changing the food again to something else. = )

I use science diet from the vets office. It's natural, and its supposed to be a lot healthier for your pets. It is never upsets they're stomachs, and my dogs love it! good luck!
