In the future how will baseball historians view Derek Jeter?

Derek doesn't have a lot of big numbers in one catagory such as slugging percentages, home runs, stolen bases etc. which is usually why players have historical significance. So how will Jeter be viewed? Or maybe you think he is simply over rated cause he is good looking (as good looking people usually are)? Also... do you think he will want to stay in baseball after he retires as a manager?

Update:

Hey chef guy... a lot of guys have batted above the 300 mark throughout their career nothing special about that and check how many players have hit 2,500 hits in their career too are they all in the HOF? Many players were rookie of the year but that has nothing to doe with big numbers.

I might add I am a big Yankee fan for 40 years - but I lam questioning why people have a love affair with Jeter. Did you happen to notice the Yankees sucked until Rodruiguez got back into the line up while Jeter was doing very little?

Update 2:

What the hell does military police have to do with your baseball knowledge? I liked your answer up to then but jeez that is a dumb source to list! Thumbs down just for that!

He will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. When his career is over, he will probably have at least 3,000 hits, he leads in most post season categories for offense, and he is over a .300 lifetime hitter. He is the first player to win World Series and All-Star MVP honors the same year. He has four WS rings, three Gold Gloves and is an eight time all-star. He will be considered one of the ten best shortstops of all time and is certainly the greatest SS in Yankees history.

Jeter will be viewed as an above average player who played on some great teams. It doesn't take a genious to recognize that the Yanks havn't won since the went away from players like Paul O'Neill, to players like Giambi and A-Rod.

Jeter is overrated for two reasons. He is good looking and he plays for the Yankees. If he played for any other team he would never be mentioned as a "greatest of all time canidate." He will be in the HOF because of name recognition and his teams sucess in the late 90s early 00's.

In the future, history will view him as the best player of this era of Yankees. He was a fan favorite from Day 1. He is HOF material, and possibly a first ballot when he gets 3,000 hits.

His strength is in numbers across the board. He does everything at the plate well. He has a great average, lots of hits, some power, some speed, he's clutch and he's the captain of the Yankees. He gets a lot of play because he plays in New York and his defense is not very good but he shows up when he has to at short.

  • I don't know how you say he doesn't have a lot of big numbers in one catagory. He has a life time BA of over 300, and is really close to 2,500 career hits. Those are some pretty big numbers. An 8 time all star, Rookie of the year, MVP, and WS MVP. How are those not big numbers? Because he doesn't hit a lot of homeruns?

give me all the thumbs down you want, but i'll say this- derek jeter is one of the best to ever play the position. he is consistant with his fielding, and his hitting. he is a first ballot hall of famer. without him, i wonder how many championships the yankees would've won? he is the glue that holds the yankees together.

edit: i never said that i used my military police knowledge to get my answer. its just my way of recognizing my answer, thats all. anything else i said upset you??????
