wireless connection problem?
So I have this weird wireless connection problem. My laptop used to work just fine with all the wireless connection in my college, and then i came home for summer vacation, and it doesn't work anymore. I have a pc and a laptop at home, and the wireless router is hooked up with pc. it worked for 2 days and then it stopped working. i checked ip address, and i found that the ip address is different from my pc ip address. my laptop ip is 169.254.76.xx. and another weird thing is there was a time, it is randomly connected with some other wireless connection, it seems like only my wireless doesn't work. Please tell me what i can do with this, I really appreciate it!
there is something more i need to update here. now even my local area connection is not working anymore either. the thing is, LAN and wireless both show connected, but when i start internet explorer, nothing is connected at all. and apparently is the wrong ip address, but i don't know how to fix it? also is it possible that i am controlled by a virus or spyware? Thx a lot!

difficult to tell what the problem is exactly, but it seems to be a router problem. (My old linksys router died on me last month, so I know it's possible)Try to use your laptop on another wireless network to be sure.
Update:
Must be the DHCP server in your router that is not working. Try to set your ip address manually to see if it does the trick:
For example: 192.168.1.10
mask:255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1 (usually)
Then go into your router setup page to see if the DHCP server is still on and if it is still connected to your ISP.

First of all it will help if you will provide the router model. It is also possible that your router settings were reset and the wireless feature has been disabled. This happens once in a while especially if there are power fluctuation or whatever hardware problem.
Just make sure that your laptop's wireless connection is working fine. Go to a hot spot and see for yourself. If the laptop connection is working fine then you can be sure that it's your router, right? So grab the manual and check if the wireless can be disabled or not because in WRT54G router it can be. You may also do a manual reset of the router settings.

Does you PC work on the internet?
The 169.254.x.x address is a default non-routable address you receive when the DHCP server (your router) doesn't respond to give you an address.
Check to see if you have DHCP turned on in your router. Verify your router's wireless settings are correct including security settings such as WEP. You may have to lookup how to do that in the manual.
You may have to remove your default wireless network settings. Click on the Start button, Click Control Panels and then Click Network Connections. Select the Wireless Network Connection. Click on the "Change Order of Preferred Network". In the Preferred Network window, remove your home network. Click on View Wireless Networks and select your home network then click Connect. Type in the correct wireless settings.

Possibly, initial two days it might have worked with other network - which in unprotected, and may not yours.
YOur router might be protected with MAC filter. means you should configure your laptops mac address there in router. Then only it will allow this laptop to use the network.
its for saftey - to avoid unauthorised use of your network..
check the settings in your router configurations...

right, first of all,it's not the router.it works with your laptop and the new netbook is picking up the signal from it. in the bottom right of the netbook screen there should be a wireless icon>right click>view available networks>pick belkin>put in security key. try the view networks first and see if the router is showing there,if it is ,email me if you still cant connect after doing the rest of the stuff

well can you connect at all?anywhere
if you can't try installing your wireless.
control panel /system/hardware /device manager then un install then restart the laptop this should work.
and your computer may have been under a preferred hot spot that's maybe why it would connect like that.check your setting i hope this helps you on your quest.

Sounds like the Campus just got a WEP or WPA password key..
That is just so people that aren't in the school can't access the free internet..
Just go to someone in charge of the internet, and ask what's up.
Or ask a nerd. :P
