"Quiz" for regular patrons of this "classical music" category: how do you "stack up"?

The Yahoo! Q & A program serves different functions for its countless users: entertainment; sometimes useful research tool; meaningful knowledge, data-base exchange; R&R; psychological tension, release valve; sometimes source of much needed, "good laugh"; etc., etc.

But I was wondering, how many of you, in what ways, do you relate to this particular "classical music" category? Care to respond to the following survey?

(1) ever review the responses to a question, if your answer wasn't chosen as Best? If so, why, and did you learn anything meaningful from it?

(2) ever posted, or read, a "comment", in that so entitled option box?

(3) contemplated(seriously)the value if any, of the "thumbs up/down" option(s)?

(4) what's the one, most important/astounding bit of info., that you've come across on this category?

(5) on a scale of 1-10, how important to you, is it in your day to day life: level, degree of addiction?

    1) absolutely. In fact I'm more likely to review the responses for questions I don't get the best answer. I'm always curious about the various perspectives everyone brings to a question.

    2) I've posted a few comments, but I've never found a question where anyone else posted a comment.

    3) I've always thought the thumbs up/down was a kind of middle school style peer pressure. I don't pay too much attention to it. I only give a thumbs down if someone presents information I can prove to be factually incorrect.

    4) I don't know that there is anyone bit of most important information. I like to use this site as a kind of sounding board. I recognize that this site is not a representative sample of classical musicians, but there are still plenty of competent thoughtful musicians here. in fact many them have already answered this question.

    5) I'm usually on about once per day. hard to say exactly how important it is.

    1. Yes, I always review questions I answered. I have often thought the answer chosen as best is better then mine but, of course, sometimes I think mine was better. Sometimes mine is chosen as best when I know another one was in fact better. I almost always learn something, either about the subject, the other answerers or myself.

    2. I've only posted a comment once or twice.

    3. I have learned to avoid thumbs down, except in cases where it is a vote on an issue and my post would be redundant. I use thumbs Up the same way and to agree with an opinion. I know I will automatically get a thumbs down if I say anything positive about a modern or experimental composer.

    4) I don't know off hand, but I learn a lot from the misicans here.

    5) 8 - I'm pretty addicted, but I I am still willing to go fishing for a few days and not have internet access.

    1. Yes, maybe 40% of the time. There are many good thought-out answers and occasionally some poor answers show up. More likely I'll look at ones that I did get a Best Answer, and wonder why.

    2. There's and option box?

    3. Contemplated the thumbs down ones, unless they were well deserved.

    4. Astounding ... the level of passion people have for their particular styles of music and instrument, and the number of times the TacoBell and Furry Lees get mentioned. Or the number of people who cannot place the most common of classical themes (Beethoven's Fifth, Ninth, Bach's T & F in d minor, &c.)

    5. Somewhere between five and eight. It's a get my mind off of work; an entertainment -- rather this than television reruns.

    Interesting questions:

    (1) - I normally review all or most responses regardless of whether mine is picked as "Best" or not. I do it just to see which answer was picked "Best", and I've learned there is no explanation for why some really bad answers are picked as "Best".

    (2) - Yes, I have done both but not often.

    (3) - Yes, I have thought about the "thumbs" option. I give thumbs up when I agree with a post or see an especially good answer or as support for someone who is getting "hammered" by other posters. I rarely use the thumbs down - only for really incorrect answers or answers that are rude to another person or inappropriate.

    (4) - I am amazed at the huge number of people who post here that apparently think that "classical forum" means any music that is old (rock and roll , pop , etc.).

    (5) Probably around an 8 , way more than my wife cares for !!!

    Musician, composer, teacher.

I still haven't gotten the CD! I'm going to call and maybe just reorder it. It might've gotten lost in the mail. I might just buy it off itunes.

    1) I do review and normally agree with the chosen answer. But sometimes when people choose based on affirming their opinion I will...

2)...post a comment and let them know they're wrong. Haha. Especially if it has to do with string things.

    3) I don't ever contemplate thumbs down or up unless someone whose opinion I trust gives me one or the other and tells me why which is rare.

    4) I learn a lot of tidbits about my instrument and literature on here. While nothing has been truly astounding, I find that it helps expand my knowledge base. That is very much appreciated.

    5) I come on every day on the weekday because I work on a computer. It kinda assuages the boredom. On the weekend, not so much. So weekday during the work day 8. Weekday at night 3. Weekend 0.

    This is fun.

    1) Yes, I review responses to questions pretty frequently. I tend to be verbose when I write, so I like to look and see if the "Best Answer" said the same thing as I did, but in a more succinct manner.

    2) I don't know the comment option box you're talking about.

    3) Not very seriously. I think those buttons are for people to say "ditto" or "you dumb schmuck" to others' answers. They're just fun.

    4) How easy it is to go on a tangent when answering someone's question (come on...we've all done it...)

    5) 4. It's a great time-killer at work.

    (1) Usually, yes. Sometimes I think "Fair enough - that was a good answer", sometimes "The fool(s) has/have chosen the answer with the wrong information in it". Yes, I'm a slightly sore loser!

    (2) Yes, when the question was posted in 'rock and pop' many months ago "Who produced Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and which track(s) did drummer Nick Mason sing on?", I was the only one who gave the correct answers (believe me, I have sound reasons to know). It was Pink Floyd themselves who produced Dark Side. Everyone else said Alan Parsons. Wrong!Parsons was only the engineer on Dark Side of the Moon - his flourishing producing career came later. And Nick Mason sang on 'Corporal Clegg' (not solo, I grant you) on Floyd's 1968 second album 'A Saucerful of Secrets'. No-one else got it. Another, completely erroneous answer was chosen as 'best'. As explained in (1) above, I sometimes think "Fools ...". I couldn't resist writing a 'comment' explaining my case. Sad, eh?

    (3) The thumbs up/down amuse me. It often says a lot more about the people reading the postings than the answers themselves. Some people think they can tell who left the 'thumbs'. I wish!....

    (4) Astounding: how many deeply stupid people there are out there. It's worrying.

    (5) I dip into Y!A several times during my working day - and sometimes in the evening and at weekends. Am I addicted? Yes, probably - I'd say I'm about a '7' (your favourite number!).

I don't know if I am (and what is) a regular patron, anyhow:

    1) Yes I do, but if I don't get the BA the main feeling is disappointment and irritation. The chances ot finding something meaningful are the same as when I get it.

    2) I do post, but it seems nobody else does

    3) The thumbs down option should be banned; it is used 90% in terms of personal preconceptual disliking. You can't get a thumb down for nailing down the exact death date of Mozart. Bet I get one on this ?

    4) Last year, a discussion on hand size in Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Anton (yes, Anton) Rubinstein. I fell short on Paderewski's feet.

    5) It depends on the other things I have to do; when it gets over 3, it is worrying, so forcing me out some months for rehab. 'Doing' music is much better than spending time here and (God forfend) on You Tube, which is the grave of music (but that's another issue).

    1. Rarely

    2. No

    3. Often - very useful for totally inane answers, or ones that are clearly incorrect (IMHO)

    4. The number of people that think the height of musical sophistication is either Pachelbel's Canon, Beethoven's Fur Elise or Orff's O Fortuna (coupling the last with the misconception that it was written by Mozart) This point is, I suppose, a reflection of the appalling level of education in, certainly, developed countries.

    5. 1. I'm far more addicted now to Second Life and Facebook.

1 - yeah i have, but only on Q's in which i was really interested

2 - i've posted a comment (literally, just one haha)

3 - (seriously) probably not...i mainly just like answers that make me laugh

4 - that some people really know a lot about classical music, but they're mirrored by the other extreme of people hardly knowing anything about it

5 - are you referring to classical music? on some days it's all i listen to (so about...a 9ish) but on others i won't play any at all (it's still imoprtant, just not a part of that particular day)
