Alternative to range hood?

Does a kitchen vent absolutely have to be in a range hood, or can it be a ceiling-mounted fan over the range? Do they make such things?

Because my choices are a ceiling-mounted fan or no fan at all, no exceptions no discussion. I have a gorgeous stained-glass antique window situated directly over the only place the range can go. (Small kitchens are fun!) Putting in a range hood would mean rebuilding the back wall and would without exception cost in the neighbourhood of $10,000, according to three estimates I've received.

Update:

Yeah, can't have a built-in stove either unless I again spend $10,000. Guess I'll have to go without.

Update 2:

More:

I guess I should point out that I wasn't looking to use a bathroom ceiling fan: I was wondering if there were any fans made that weren't included in a range hood.

And unfortunately I already have a nice stove I don't intend to replace after five days.

I've been watching your question because we don't have a range hood and have wondered the same thing. So far not having one hasn't been a problem for us.

Some stoves use a downdraft vent system that is equal to the range hoods. This will vent through the wall as the hood does, but it is at floor level. This is usually found on built in stoves, just a suggestion.

i do no longer understand approximately your plan yet in my mom's domicile there replaced into an exhaust fan around the kitchen from the range extreme above the cabinets and it may vent the kitchen. It had a overlaying door that matched the wall and a pull stick that would open the door and activate the fan. I used that concept in my cutting-edge lounge. all people right here laughed yet I used a small domicile vent fan and placed it extreme on an exterior wall and use it to pull out each and all the extreme warm air. it is ideas-blowing to pull interior the night air and out with the nice and comfortable air and enables me to apply lots much less a/c. It additionally has adequate oomph to pull out any cooking odors, smoke or different issues rapidly. you relatively do no longer observe it whilst it is not in use. it is recommended to think approximately certainly one of those on your kitchen. could I ever get around to it, I intend to apply that plan in my kitchen too. i've got in no way considered a vent fan for a range that long of run or one that bends yet that would not propose it won't be able to be performed.

I am afraid you are out of luck. Ceiling fans do not work in this application. Range hoods create suction that pulls steam, etc up and through a filter. Using a ceiling fan, even if you reverse it, will make a mess of your beautiful small kitchen........Sorry
