Should we expect another record year of Arctic Sea Ice melting?

The latest report from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) shows a rapidly accelerating sea ice extent decline. The month of May saw a loss of 8,000 km^2 sea ice per day (60% more rapid than last year at this time).

It looks like the ice produced in 2008 (though a cold year), is simply too thin to hold up and we may be exceeding last Septembers record low level. Should we expect headlines in August or September about new record low sea ice levels?

Update:

Mike - Sea Ice melting doesn't cause the sea level to rise. But it is clear evidence the warming continues and it does decrease the albedo effect, which is an undesirable warming feedback effect.

It certainly looks like it's going to be close. It will probably depend on the global temperature change the rest of the year. My guess based on the ice extent trend so far and monthly temperature data is that this year's melt will be almost the same as last year's.

some human beings will by no ability have the means to entice close the vast image. (ie; Jello predicting and now Dana is assuming). I for one, know Jello is guffawing his at the back of off. you have some stable skeptic solutions fairly (Birddogs), it somewhat is the way it variety of feels to paintings. we don't placed up for factors in line with say, yet greater for correctional measures. If Dana would not look after Alabama then he might desire to give up utilising UAH for a source. merely because of the fact he has a image voltaic powered outhouse, does no longer propose pages of the IPCC comments are not lacking.
