I am an American thinking about taking a job in London. Does anyone have any pointer? Thanks?

I live in New York City and am wondering if it's much more expensive in London. Also how about the social life? Is it easy to meet people there? Thanks for any info.

I think it would be a good move! It would certainly be a great experience. It would be more expensive, London is an expensive place to live, but you would make lots of new friends and meet loads of new people. The English aren't as negative towards Americans as people are making out. I think it would be a good move.

Well, do you have a degree? Is your job of demand in London? If you're applying for a minimum wage job, why would they hire you - a foreigner? Unless your job is of demand - doctors, nurses, businessmen - you'll be turned back at Heathrow. What would you tell the immigration officers, "Oh..I'll find some job and live at some place in London.." Yeah, right. By the way, London is twice as expensive as New York City. With American money, you'll surely go bankrupt.

PS If you plan to visit London only to show off your Americanism (which is common among American tourists), then don't bother visiting. The English have a strong sense of anti-Americanism.

London is more expensive than New York because of the exchange rate. But I find NY and London very similar in many respects.

At first you will be alienated. Unless you really try to make it work you will be disappointed. You will have to change yourself; attempt to hide your American ways as much as possible there. Like Bruce Ree said they don't like Americans all that much.

Don't loose hope though; were there is a will, there is a way. Don't throw away an opportunity like that. Just research the area, research the customs, and research the dress.

If they can come to this country, you can go there!
