I would suggest that you do a full virus scan and reinstall the messenger ...

To open a .dat record top click it and decide Open With after which opt for notepad. the attention difficulty i can think of of it somewhat is saved in that format for Yahoo Messenger are the emote.dat record (default Yahoo emotes), and the emote_user.dat (custom emotes) records.
