Checking Tails?

I was at an open show over the weekend and the judge was checking fake tails. It is legal to have them but I was just curious as to what she may be looking for. Can anyone answer this?

Tails are legal in some breeds, but not all. Morgans do not allow extensions of any sort. And both AQHA and APHA have rules about their tails - they must be natural hair fastened onto natural hair. AQHA does not allow a weighed tail, APHA does but its up to the judge's discreation to how much they may weight.

I'm not certain what the judge was looking for. Perhaps she was checking to be certain they were hair to hair, perhaps she was checking weight, perhaps she hadn't had much to do with extensions before and was comparing for her own interest sake (I know there is a huge range of experience that Open show judges have)

Without asking her I guess it will all be speculation, but my guess is weight and type of tail.

And it is possible she was checking to see if the horse's tail seemed blocked, although that isn't any more likely in a horse with an extension than in those without. If she was checking all the tails I'd guess she was looking for blocking, and if so, good for her!
