Though an increase was expected since early this year but the latest fuel hike is too sudden and too steep.. I wasn't really angry but rather dissappointed with the way the government did it. Just a day before that, a minister annouced that fuel price would only be increased in August and then very next day, our "hero", the PM annouced an increase of not 10% or 20% but more than 40%. I was angry with the "cakap tak serupa bikin" attitude of the government. Secondly, there is no reason why the increase has to be that much. Malaysia is a net importer of oil and government owned Petronas is making billions in profit, therefore isn't it fair for the government to provide cheaper fuel to it's people ? Thirdly, the government told the "rakyat" the money saved from the so called subsidy would be used to finance development projects. This gave an impression that the government is running short of fund. Instead of increasing fuel prices, the government should instead look at its own backyard to curb corruption and stop spending on money wasting but ego boosting projects. I am sure the money saved from being "corrupted away" would be more than enough to cover the subsidies for fuel.
Now that the increase has been announced and would never be withdrawn anymore, the more crucial issue is how the government is going to ensure that the "extra" sum collected from fuel users would be spent. Personally i am not that optimistic that the fund would be managed properly. In the end, only a small group of people get to enjoy this "extra" money.
For electricity, there is nothing to be angry about. The increase in electricity tariff is just an inevitable "spill-over" effect from the hike in fuel prices. This we have to accept.

I was angry in the beginning, like for 2 days. Then I listened to the government's explanation and it cooled me off a bit. I understand now that while we are a net exporter at the moment, as soon as in 3 years time, we will be a net importer!! We'll crash and burn then, if a drastic measure is not taken immediately. And we can't really compare with other net importer countries like the Arab countries because of the ratio of gallons per user (we have less gallons available per user, and a lot more users- just look at the no of cars on our roads).
I understand now that previous subsidy structure benefits the rich more than the poor. The rich has more cars, big cars, and use more oil than the rest of us due to their big tanks. Sekali pump, beratus ringgit, meaning they used more subsidized oil. While the poor uses a motorcycle or a Kancil, and pumps in the most RM40? So the poor don't use as much as the subsidized oil. In that, I agree with what the government is doing. Remove the subsidy and give back to those who really need it. However, Im NOT sure whether the rebate system is the best answer! Here are my suggestions to the government:
1. There should be a really welfare system to look after the poor since the cost of living is going up. This is where the Welfare Ministry should do their job! Ng Yen Yen.....WHERE ARE YOU???!!! I suggest a food stamp system such as that practised by the US. Those under certain level of income gets free food.
2. Provide better alternatives for the people to travel. If you don't improve the public transportation, look into alternative fuels, then theres no point of introducing this new subsidy structure. The people will still drive and use up all the fuel and we will be a net importer in 3 years.
I believe that the government themselves should buckle up and work harder. Most importantly, work with each other! And make better plannings!!
The government also said that they'll review their own expenditure. Lets see if they can make this promise. If they continue with their unneccessary, wasteful spending and mega projects using the peoples money, while the people are told to 'ikat perut'......Siap! Next election.....you people won't have a job!
