Are WW2 German medals and awards beautiful and well designed?

I have been told that a lot of post-WW2 USSR and USA awards are based on the designs.

I give credit where credit is due and German gear was better looking than it's allied counter parts. I don't know of any new medal designs since WW1 so I doubt the German awards had the desired effect of being imitated.

No. Post WW2 US awards have zero design commonality with German awards. There's no "wound badge", "close combat badge", and "armor destruction badge" in the US awards library. I'm less positive about Soviet awards, but I've never seeen anything there either that one could attribute to a WW2 German design.

    The Germans basically had:

    Specialty badges

Achievement badges-NOT "awards" as the term is used in the US military, e.g. those named above

    Service ribbons/cuff sleeves.

Then gallantry awards, i.e., the various levels of the Eisen Kreuz/Ritter Kreuz. These have no equivalent to post-war medals either.

Personal belief here...The medals of all countries are beatiful and well designed. It really doesn't matter what your national philosophy is, heroism is heroism. I think the US's Bronze Star, Silver Star and Medal of Honor are simple but beautiful. Good luck to you pardner.

That's an aesthetic judgment. The Nazis went to a lot of trouble to make many things aesthetically pleasing... to THEIR sensibilities. Whether anyone else agrees or doesn't agree is based upon their personal outlook.

Both the American and Russian militarise had some links with the Prussians hence the small amount of similarity

Yes- and as P J O'Rourke pointed out; no one ever had fantasies about being raped by someone dressed as a liberal.

Certainly if it is that important to you, you'll do your own research.
