Doctor Who The Doctor's Daughter?

OK. The Doctor Who episode of The Doctor's Daughter just aired here in the States last night on the Sci Fi Channel. I have a question about what happened to the Doctor's daughter.

I knew that being a time lord that being shot would not kill her. However she game back to life without actually regenerating. Why did she not change as all Time Lords do when they regenerate or did she recover by some other method, like with the terra forming item like Spock did in Star Trek III?

Update:

I really don't mind so much as I hope to see her again. I think she is hotter than any of the Doctor's companions or anyboyd in Torchwood.

Update 2:

Amber

The first Doctor traveled with his granddaughter. There was also a story line that involved a bad female Timelord called The Rani. His granddaughter left to be with a man she fell in love with and never regenerated. I cannot recall what happed to The Rani but she didn't regnerate.

The Master was different but never talked about his regenerations until the new series. The different Masters only copied their hair and gotee, an easy thing to do without chooing a look. In the new series he choose to regenerate but didn't choose his appearance.

The Doctor always seemed surprised by his new looks and inspected himself afterwards. I don't recall exact conversations but have been led to believe that the regenration was a random process and a timelord never knows what the outcome will be.

Update 3:

The Torchwood season 2 ened about 2 months ago on BBC America. The third season won't start for a few more months.

Update 4:

Martha Jones

Thanks. I looked but did not see a simular question. Did not think to look that far back.

I don't recall the 3rd Doctor being shot off of the top of my head. But I don't imagine he actually died. In this episode Martha said she was dead so that would normally call for a regeneration not just a recovery.

Also these regenerations, in the new series, seem to happen much quicker and his recovery is almost instantanious too. I remember the original series taking much longer for both.

I was about to answer this in full, but I see marthajones83 has said most of what I was going to, with reference to one of my previous answers - and no I don't mind :-)

I'll just add that there is a long standing precedent in Doctor Who for Time Lords recovering from serious injury without regenerating, even outwith their regeneration cycle. In the 3rd Doctor story "Spearhead from Space", the Doctor recovered from a gunshot wound, very similar to Jenny's. he also went into a coma in which he gave the appearance of death in similar fashion to Jenny. Martha, not being used to Time Lord physiology, just assumed she was dead and didn't give her time to recover. To be perfectly honest, the Doctor should have known better.

Also as marthajones83 implied, there is a bit in the next story you'll see, where the Doctor makes an amazing recovery from something that would kill a human, without regenerating.

Before it is absolutely necessary for a Time Lord to regenerate, they need to have something wrong with them that they simply can't recover from. They can choose to regenerate, however, as we saw with the Master in "Utopia" and Romana in "Destiny of the Daleks", or choose not to regenerate, as we saw with the Master in "Last of the Time Lords"

You are right that there is a possibility that the terraforming device might have helped though.

Edit: Amber is correct about the female Time Lord. That was Romana who travelled with the 4th Doctor. When she regenerated in "Destiny of the Daleks", she not only was able to choose her own appearance, but was also able to "try on" a number of different appearances before she decided on a final one. It was strongly implied that this was an ability peculiar to female Time Lords.

Also, Jenny's recovery was obviously not instantaneous. We have no idea how much time passed between the Doctor leaving and her recovering, but it was implied in the episode that some time had passed. Your memory must be playing tricks on you regarding regenerations in the old series. No actual regeneration took more than a few seconds, although the Doctor was often quite ill for a while afterwards - as was the 10th Doctor after his regeneration.

In the old series of Doctor Who I think the doctor traveled with a female time lord at one point in the series. If I'm remembering this correctly other time lords are able to choose their appearance. I don't know why the doctor can't choose his appearance. Anyway, if this is the case maybe she choose to look the same.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this, it's been awhile since I've seen the older episodes and I was fairly young at the time.

Anyway that's the only explanation I can come up with.

Err.. I hope you don't mind me quoting someone else... But this is the best explanation I have seen!

"I think Jenny may be perfectly capable of regeneration, but was able to recover from her gunshot wound without needing to resort to that. It also may be the case that since she was generated by the machine, she was undergoing a post-regenerative cycle similar to the Doctor in "The Christmas Invasion".

This seems likely since the stuff that came out of her mouth seemed very similar to what happened to the Doctor in that episode before he grew back his severed hand. So in that case, Jenny would simply have been able to grow back the tissue that had been damaged by the bullet.

It was established in the classic series that Time Lords have quite amazing powers of recovery, particularly in the few days immediately after a regeneration. The third Doctor was shot during his first story "Spearhead from Space" and recovered without regenerating.

I also think the Master could have recovered from his gunshot wound in "Last of the Time Lords", but he chose not too simply to get back at the Doctor."

Err sorry, I cut out the last paragraph because it contains a bit of a spoiler for next week's episode The Unicorn and the Wasp (For those of us in the US). But if you don't mind spoilers, well that full answer can be seen on the link below! The answer was given by Spacephantom... And I hope he doesn't mind my posting it! lol.

    I hope this helped!

Well, I thought it was clever. Did you make it up? If so send it in to Readers Digest and you might get some money if they like it well enough to print. Good luck.
