Removing deposite on 100 yr old floor tiles?

My house has lovely 100 yr old tiles but some have a white deposit which disappears when they are wet. Maybe it is glue (they were covered with vinyl tiles). I want to remove it and just rubbing doesn't do much. Any ideas? I have tried adhesive cleaner. Help?

The deposit is called efflorescence. It normally requires a specialist to remove it as the substrate the tile is on and the type of tile have to be taken into account before applying anything.

yup that sounds about right...not a real amount you can do unless you can lift and clean and relay them...there are acid tile cleaners out there that remove much, but would recommend trying only one tile preferably where no one can see it if going down that route...you would then also have to re-seal the tile depending on the tile type to prevent grime etc ...

Try vinegar-it really cleans lime and hard water deposits so it may work-also if that doesn't work try acetone polish remover- but in a hidden spot first.

you could try meths , I think it may be salts coming through the tiles if they are porous like you get on brickwork.

You might want to ask your local builders merchant if they have chems to remove the salts then you could try a sealer on the tiles to stop the salts coming through
