Pronunciation among blacks?

For many years I've wondered why, even among highly educated black people I know, there is one word which is often mispronounced - it's the word ask which I've heard as axe. Could someone, perhaps, explain this to me? Thank you.

Update:

Thank you, verry much, for the many replies received; it appears to be regional. Am, originally, from Boston - (wahtah for water) and moved to NYC where I, particularly, noticed this but didn't observe it on the west coast.

Well ~ I'm a "twit" as, I just realized, I don't know how to give 10 points for Best Answer! So - this is an additional question .. thanks, again.

whoa guys. calm down. it's not "racist" if the asker legitimately doesn't know.

maybe you live in an area where people just talk like that - i know a lot of my friends from, for example, brooklyn, in general just say words like that. it might just be a colloquial thing - like i can't pronounce the word "water" like everyone else seems to want to hear it said.

The Middle English pronunciation of "ask" is "AXE".

It is typical of the inhabitants of the Gullah islands to pronounce ask in ths manner.

When Prince Edward of Enland visted to the USA, he was ask in which part of the USA the English language sounded nearest to the spoken language he was accustomed. He said that it was the people of the Gullah Islands.

Because it's easier to pronounce that way. It's a common linguistic phenomenon called "metathesis", common especially among Southerners, who pronounce "pretty" as "purty", or foliage as "foilage". It also explains why George W. Bush pronounces "nuclear" as "nucular".
