    When someone is septic, it means that an infection has spread throughout the body through the blood stream, and multiple organs are infected. Sepsis can be fatal if it shuts down a vital organ, if the pathogen does not respond readily to antibiotics, or if the organs involved in the immune response are weakened by infection.
