ProHeart 6 is coming back. Good thing? Bad thing?

ProHeart 6 (heartworm preventative) is back, in a limited way.

Per the FDA:

"FDA has announced the limited return of a reformulated version of ProHeart 6, a heartworm prevention drug for dogs, which had been withdrawn because of serious, life-threatening adverse reactions. FDA concurs with the limited return of the drug to the U.S. veterinary market under a risk minimization and restricted distribution program designed to provide for safe, appropriate use of the product while minimizing risk to dogs.

http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01844.h... "

The Risk Minimization Program is not unlike the Black Box label warnings included in labeling material for some of the more problematic human medications. Vets wishing to distribute ProHeart 6 would be required to register and undergo education before being allowed to purchase it .

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

Update:

Just saw this from the FDA's FAQ on ProHeart 6:

"ProHeart 6 is the only FDA approved injectable heartworm preventive that is labeled for 6 months of protection, thus greatly minimizing owner compliance issues."

In other words: "If you're too forgetful or lazy to feed your dog a pill once a month, we've got an alternative for you - Sign here, and good luck!"

Bad thing. I wouldn't ever trust that company. I live in Canada, and as far as I know, we don't have anything like that available here. But I have no problems with applying my dog's preventative once per month. That's why they have calendar stickers in the box, so you don't forget to give it. I can see why a 6-month preventative in one application would be dangerous.

All I know is that our vet clinic used alot of ProHeart 6 and we did not have any problems with it. We had a lot of clients upset that it was pulled from the market.

Bad thing. I used to volunteer with a rescue and several of our rescues died from ProHeart 6. Personally, I don't see why they're bringing it back...the monthly works fine.

Personally, I don't care. I'm not interested in using it.

I have no reason to not use Heartgard. I know what's in it, it's proven, and I trust it.
