Why does US policy force us to defend Tawian from Chinese attack?

Why do we have a policy stating that the US military will defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion? Isn't alliances like that how World War One started? Any thoughts on this?

"...In 1945 at the end of World War II the Republic of China added the island groups of Taiwan (Formosa) and the Pescadores to its authority. These island groups, together with Kinmen and Matsu, became the full extent of the Republic of China's authority after 1949 when the Kuomintang (KMT) lost the Chinese Civil War to the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded in mainland China. .."

The Nationalist Chinese Government, ROC were long time friends and allies of the US. This is THE China that is one of the "Allies" of WW II. And as one of "the Big Five" it is ROC that originally gets China a seat as a permanent member on the UN Security Council.

When Nixon establishes his one China policy recognizing the Communist, PRC, People's Republic of China US friends did not would not totally abandon the loyal ally from WW II, Taiwan, (ROC no more)

And since there is only one China, PRC, there is no US treaty with Taiwan. US cannot have a treaty with Taiwan because that would de facto recognize Taiwan as independent.

Taiwan independence and recognition is still very much a sticking point in US China Taiwan relationships. The US is therefore bound by a US Federal law and not a treaty to maintain Taiwan's security.

And while Taiwan is an old friend and ally going back to WW II, Communist People's Republic of China is a recent enemy, directly attacking and killing US, UN forces in Korea. And later aiding, and arming the N Vietnamese.

US is not going to defend Taiwan and the take over of Taiwan by mainland China is not at all going to happen! In fact it will remain just like Hong Kong (even though China has taken the possession from UK long ago!) mostly as independent with its own internal arrangement but would be doing most of its business with Mainland China only! Taiwan was sending all of its products to the Mainland through Hong Kong for three decades and in the past 15 years it is sending them directly, saving billions, since the mainland China is the largest market for Taiwan, today! Further, the mainland has given up the communist measures of social change so Taiwan has no problem in getting along with the mainland China!

Taiwan was formed by the ppl that fled comunnist china. We pledged an oath after ww2 to help any ppl that stands up to a communist govt.

That is why we will protect taiwan. Plus it is a prime base if we ever do go to war with china.

  • Seventy years or so ago the Island was leased by Britain from China for 50 year long contract. China chose not to renew the lease. Our contract of protection did not expire.

Don't call me on it but we have long long term agreement to protect and care for their military and welfare safety after the World Wars happened and we were the only stable "cops on the block". We helped all who asked. We even helped Stalin during the middle of WWII.

    Hope that helps some!

We don't believe in letting another country forcefully take over another country just cause they want to. We want to defend these people's liberty and their right to choice which government they want. If they people want Chinese Communism, they then can have it, but if they want democracy it is America's obligation to help all those who wish for freedom and liberty in the face of oppression.
