Litter Size?

I have a beagle...i took her to the vet today for her prenatal exam...the ultra sound shows only 2 puppies...according to my research the litter size would be 4 to 6...do you think it is possible that one might be hidden? Thanks in advance...

A litter of 4-6 is only a rule of thumb, they can have more or less. A ***** will only have what she can cope with.

It is possible for scans to miss pups though as they can be sitting directly behind one another. Although I think it depends on how good the vet is with the scanner itself, my vet was very good. We saw 7 pups on the scan and she had 7 pups.

But good luck and start saving newspapers, you'll need them!!!

My boxer was scanned and the vet told us that she was not pregnant.

A few weeks later, we saw the vet at training classes and he thought the dog looked a bit chubbier so he laid her down and had a feel of her abdomen and told us that he could feel at least three lumps which he guessed were puppies.

A couple of weeks on my dog gave birth to a litter of seven, so scans can be wrong.

Not possible the prenatal exam would have picked it up. That is a small liter size for any dog though!

  • no sorry i have never heard of an ultra sound being wrong or not finding a hiding pup and beagles tend to have little litter and 2 is actually very commend..... congrats and good luck and ejoy your new pups!

Scans are not reliable. X rays should be done just a few days before she is due. You never get a good number from a sonogram, but a lot of people do them because they are cheaper. I have always felt they were a total waste of money.

Relax and don't worry the ultra sound results in most cases are perfect.
