Basically, a software engineer is a glorified term for a programmer.
But if you are interested in what it means, it comes down to who you work for more than just what it is. Software engineering is about developing high quality software for end users. It’s called engineering because it is meant to follow a process, rather than just coding on the fly. This involves phases like system requirements/analysis, system design, development, testing and implementation etc. Some companies stick to this ideal, and generally gain from it. Others don't, and will eventually pay the price...
As a student I always thought it was kind of yuppie to go through all that, but ten years in the industry has taught me it is not just a good idea, but absolutely necessary.
To become a software engineer, I would suggest going to college and study a 4 year bachelors of computer science. Focus on programming, system analysis and design and information systems classes.
As far as the lifestyle is concerned, that depends in you. The job usually involves deadlines and computers have their own set of frustrations, so yeah there is some stress, but it’s manageable. But it must be said that it is a career for the passionate. If you don't like programming or sitting in front of computers for long ours - seek a future somewhere else.
As for pay - probably between $60000-$90000 per year. That depends on experience just as much as qualifications, so see if you can get internships during the summer. Graduates without any experience won't get that much, so internships can give a huge boost to your first salary. Also, software engineers can go higher up in organizations to fill management and executive positions, such as Chief Information Officer.
Hope this helps...

Trust me; if you're misspelling a request, stay out of computer science as a favor to me. I'm a BAD grammatically correct person and you'd have wrecked every program with that sentence in computer science. You're not ready. You could try, the grammatical level is not promising for CS - Trust me. Software Engineering is more directional and less grammatical and much more forgiving. Information Technology is hardware plus the other two. And let us not forget the others. Computer Administrator, the police of all the hatred in the world (immune to all pleadings/requests). Backup operators, saviors as the ship goes down. But, right to the question at hand. Computer science v. Engineering. CS writes the code, Engineers put the code together to make a "car" run, and the Administrator tells the car where it's allowed to go. If I haven't screwed up the punctuation, I might just qualify as a CS major. I don't count on it. I'm a teacher. Georgia, Certifiably, bureaucratically it has become illegal to teach anything in this state (GA). IT (Information Technology) is your safest bet. Basically, middle management. No decisions, no hard work, and no job security. Your choice, RUN!!!! Your first free tool is linked from a non-partisan site. Luck

Lots of competition around
Sometimes frustating saturation
& slow career growth / promotion(stuck up)
Lots of Job changes (leap like a frog, company to company)
(Attrition)
eased by Nasscom Demand-Supply Reports
However,
Recently,
Automation & improvements in Code Generation techniques might result in less demand for programming / development jobs & more demand for other domains like testing etc ...
U are expected to be rapidly adaptable to changing work environment
Be at par with your Team Lead's expectations
delivering work within set deadline
Also
if u opt for development,
they measure your skillset & work in form of metrics
like
errors per kilo lines of code etc ...
Well, salary & job stability is unpredictable
atleast for freshers

uh - yeah - software engineering - you can work for a company who doesn't want to buy "canned" or "off-the-shelf" software, and they will pay you real good. You need to graduate from college with either an A or high B average, with a math minor, and then go on to get your microsoft certification.
